Bowmanville, Courtice, Newcastle, Orono and the hamlets
Highway 2, called King Street in Bowmanville and King Avenue in Newcastle, strings the urban areas together a kilometre or two north of the 401. Courtice is the west end, from Townline Road to roughly Hancock Road, a set of subdivisions built from the 1980s onward around Trulls Road, Courtice Road and Nash Road. Bowmanville starts west of Bowmanville Avenue with the newest subdivisions and the big-box centre at Clarington Boulevard, runs through a Victorian downtown around Temperance and King streets, and climbs north past Concession Road 3 into the current growth area. Newcastle is a compact village at Mill Street with new streets to the north and west and the Port of Newcastle community and marina on the lake. Orono sits on Main Street off the 35/115, twenty minutes north, with a few hundred houses and its own shops. Rural Clarington is the rest: Hampton, Enniskillen, Tyrone, Solina, Burketon, Kendal, Newtonville, Kirby and Leskard, each a crossroads with a hall or a store, and the concession roads between them.
