Lakeview, Oshawa

Lakeview detached homes for sale

Detached houses in Lakeview are mostly wartime and postwar: storey-and-a-half frame houses from the 1940s on Cedar, Wilson South, Chaleur and the Ritson streets, 1950s and 1960s brick bungalows near the schools and Valley Drive, and side-splits and two-storeys from the 1970s toward Farewell Street. Lots are wider than downtown, commonly 40 to 60 feet, with a single driveway and often a detached garage or workshop. Cottage-style houses near Lakeview Park have been rebuilt or enlarged over the years. What to check: original frame houses may have thin insulation, undersized electrical services and additions built without paperwork, so request the history and an ESA inspection; bungalows often have finished basements and side entrances that hint at suites; and any house near the creek or Harbour Road should be checked on the CLOCA map. Roofs, windows and furnaces are the usual replacement items. Streets south of Wentworth toward the lake are the most sought after.

Questions people ask about Lakeview

What are wartime houses like to live in?

Small, solid and simple: usually two bedrooms up under a steep roof, one bath, a basement dug for a furnace, and a wide lot. Most in Lakeview have been extended with dormers, rear kitchens or full second storeys. They are easy to heat once insulated and easy to expand, but expect original plumbing or wiring in the ones that have not been touched.

Which Lakeview streets sit nearest the lake?

Lakeview Park Avenue, the south end of Simcoe Street South and the short streets beside the park are steps from the beach, and Cedar Street and Wilson Road South reach the lake within a ten-minute walk. Streets north of Wentworth are inland but still handy to the Waterfront Trail by bike.

Can I add a garage or a second unit on a Lakeview lot?

Wide lots make garages, workshops and additions easier than in most older parts of Oshawa, subject to setbacks and the City's zoning. Second units are allowed in detached houses that satisfy the building code and the City's parking and fire rules. Check that an existing suite was registered, and budget for its own entrance and an egress window if one is not.
