Choosing a pocket under $700,000
South Oshawa, meaning Lakeview, Vanier and the blocks of Central near downtown, gives the most house for the money, with wartime and mid-century bungalows on generous lots, walkable streets and the harbour and Lakeview Park nearby; the trade-offs are older wiring, some tired blocks and a longer bus ride to the north end. Donevan, Eastdale and Centennial across the city's middle offer sixties and seventies family homes with finished basements and quick access to the 401. Windfields and Samac supply the newest option at this budget, mostly townhouses with a fee or a shared wall, close to the Ontario Tech campus, Durham College and the 407. Check the basement, the panel and the roof on anything older, and check the condominium documents on anything newer.
