Reading the city by decade
Before 1960 the detached stock was cottages and village houses: the bayfront and bluff streets of West Shore, Rosebank and Rougemount, the old Dunbarton village along Fairport Road, and the hamlets of Claremont, Whitevale, Greenwood and Brougham. The 1960s and 1970s built Bay Ridges and the first streets of Liverpool and Village East. The 1980s and 1990s added Amberlea, Highbush, Woodlands and Brock Ridge, the neo-colonial and Tudor-fronted two-storeys that make up the largest share of Pickering houses today. The 2000s brought infill and rebuilt lots across the south, plus the later phases of Brock Ridge, and since 2017 Seaton has supplied nearly all of the city's new detached construction, on narrower lots with double garages and warranties still running. Lot width shrinks and interior size grows as the decades advance.
